Now in its fifth year, the Knight Frank/UCAS Student Accommodation research survey provides a unique insight into the opinions and preferences of students about where and how they live. The results help developers, investors and universities plan effectively for the future.
The 2024 edition has revealed that the availability of affordable quality accommodation is playing a far greater role now than ever before in a students choice of University. Perhaps somewhat shocking to many people will be the fact that a massive 65% of first time University applicants revealed that the availability of suitable accommodation was cited as a major influence on their decision of where to apply.
Maybe less surprising to investors was the fact that an enormous 69% of students view PBSA (purpose built student accommodation) as their preference when choosing where to live. The report states that by the end of the decade the purpose built sector will accommodate the majority of second and third year students. Higher levels of satisfaction among those living in purpose built accommodation is one factor as is convenience and cost.
The survey also found that students prioritise things like practical amenities over luxury features. Super fast Wi-Fi, security and and on site laundrette ranks far higher than a swimming pool.
